What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is component of Traditional Chinese Medicine that has been used for over 3000 years as a method of supporting the body and mind in their own natural healing processes. In recent years, it has become more and more popular, evolving into one of the most utilized forms of complementary integrative medicine in the United States. This can be attributed to its effectiveness for pain relief and in treating a wide variety of conditions, as well as the fact that scientific studies have begun to prove its safety and efficacy.

According to Traditional Chinese Medicine, a state of disease occurs as a result of an imbalance or ‘blockage’ in the body’s natural energy flow and acupuncture works directly with this energy or ‘Qi’. Acupuncturists insert very fine, sterile needles into specific spots or ‘acu-points’ on the body that act as conduits for energy, blood and fluid circulation to unblock areas of pain and restore balance in the body.
In terms of Western physiology, the latest research shows us that this ancient concept of ‘Qi’ or energy flow corresponds to nerve transmission, connective tissue planes, various metabolic components transported via the blood like oxygen, hormones, nutrients and neurotransmitters, as well as various functions of organ systems. Acupuncture has been demonstrated to regulate and improve the function of all of these components, resulting in decreased pain and improved overall health.
In her practice, Dana takes an integrative approach, often combining this ancient wisdom with modern research and techniques.

Explore some of the ways acupuncture works:

Promotes Healing:  Acupuncture offers small energetic prompts to help the body restore balance and homeostasis.

Releases Blockages:  Acupuncture increases energetic flow to blocked areas and stimulates proper organ function, promoting overall health.

Improves Circulation:  By increasing circulation of blood, energy, fluids and nutrients, acupuncture improves functions throughout the entire body.

Decreases Pain:   Acupuncture has been demonstrated to enhance the body’s natural opiates such as endorphins and release corticosteroids, effectively reducing pain.

Reduces Inflammation:  Pro-inflammatory markers or proteins have been shown to decrease with acupuncture treatment.
